Came to Believe

Step Two gently and very gradually began to infiltrate my life.
I can't say upon what occasion or upon what day
I came to believe in a Power greater than myself,
but I certainly have that belief now.

I'm Keith, an alcoholic.

Welcome to the new folks! It's good to be clean and sober this morning. Step Two was a life-changer for me. I was down on myself after admitting and accepting Step One. I was at a low point in my life. Step Two was not entirely about God for me. The main thing I got from this Step was two-fold: Number one -- I wasn't going to get myself sober, it was going to come from something greater than myself. What a relief! If it had said, "Came to believe that I had to try harder," then I would have been dead. I've been trying on my own my whole life, so this Step began the journey out of Keith's ego. Number two -- the insanity. I thought the insanity was being shot, locked up in a Mexican prison, a divorce, etc. Actually, the insanity is thinking I can drink normally, that one drink isn't going to hurt anything. I'd been telling myself that my whole life. So, some sanity started to return in Step Two. I realize now that it's the FIRST drink that gets me. What a revelation! I then learned that doubt and faith could coexist. That idea also helped, but that didn't happen until later. Step Two can change your life; there is a whole chapter dedicated to it in the Big Book. Enjoy the reading, it just may save your life -- it did mine. Thanks for letting me share.
