Only Step One,
where we made the 100 percent admission
we were powerless over alcohol,
can be practiced with absolute perfection.
The remaining eleven Steps state perfect ideals.
They are goals toward which we look,
and the measuring sticks
by which we estimate our progress.
Many of our fears are tissue paper thin,
and a single courageous step
would carry us clear through them.
S T E P S = Solutions To Every Problem in Sobriety.
I'm Mackley, an alcoholic.
I had some misgivings right from the start, because I was reading Step One as, "We pled guilty to being powerless over alcohol ..." Finally, I used a dictionary and found 15 definitions for "admit." The primary definitions were along the lines of a theater ticket that reads, "Admit One." I can open the blinds and admit the sunlight. I can open a door and admit a person, or a breeze. That's when it dawned on me. I can open my heart and my mind and admit the truth: I am powerless over alcohol. Not a bad thing. Not illegal. Just a fact of my life. Thank you for supporting my sobriety.
