Step Four

We want to find exactly how, when, and where
our natural desires have warped us.
We wish to look squarely at the unhappiness
this has caused others and ourselves.
By discovering what our emotional deformities are,
we can move toward their correction.
Without a willing and persistent effort to do this,
there can be little sobriety or contentment for us.
Without a searching and fearless moral inventory,
most of us have found that the faith which really works
in daily living is still out of reach.

Thought to Ponder....

Many of our fears are tissue paper thin,
and a single courageous step
would carry us clear through them.

Hello everyone. I'm Charlie, an alcoholic.

I had no idea how to look within myself, but I knew I needed to do it as I was assured that I would drink again if I did not. So I depended on my sober friends to help me. They were more than happy to do so. I prayed before writing my first Step Four, hoping to write what the Higher Power wanted me to see. I can assure you I did not do my first Fourth Step perfectly, but then again I didn't have to. They say it is the beginning of a lifetime process, and it has been for me. The mistake would be to not do it at all, thinking, "I don't have to be that honest" or, "What will they think of me?" It's where I started growing up in AA. None of my sober friends died from doing a Fourth Step, but I have seen them die from not doing it. There is no original sin. Everything you think you have done, no matter what it is, has been done since humans have walked the earth. Just keep coming and keep an open mind and enjoy the trip. Don't forget to make time for some fun while you're working on your Fourth Step!
