Uniqueness

I learned that all of us alcoholics,
no matter who we are or where we come from,
drink the way we do for one basic reason --
our alcoholism.
We have a disease that won't let us stop drinking,
once we pick up the first one.
Our disease is profound and dynamic, constantly invading
the mental and spiritual tissues of our being. . .
The rewards of sobriety are bountiful
and as progressive as the disease they counteract.
Perhaps greatest among these rewards has been
a release from the frightening prison
of my uniqueness.
