Starting and Stopping

I remember telling a friend years ago
that I didn't have a drinking problem.
I had a stopping problem.
We laughed, it was true,
but there was something else going on,
something that never occurred to me until I came to AA.
I didn't just have a stopping problem,
I had a starting problem, too.
No matter how often I stopped, or for how long,
I always started drinking again.

Thought to Ponder....

Hi all! My name is Derryl, alcoholic.

Starting and stopping ... I have done that so many times in my life. New determination, new resolutions, or another "self-help" book. But when I came to AA and found the Big Book and you lovely people, you scared me into staying sober. I was taught about relapse in treatment and wanted to ... just once ... succeed at something! My heart goes out to those who keep coming in through the 'revolving door,' because I'm not sure I could make it back. That's what scares me most. So, I am grateful that we do get a second chance, and a third, a fourth, etc. The hand of AA is always outstretched to those of us who want it and need it. I sometimes wish you could do my recovery for me, it would be so much easier, but I have to be responsible for myself ... ouch! That was a hard pill to swallow. But I thank you for finally bringing me to my senses. May those who are here today, stay. And may those who have gone back out, have another chance at recovery. Bless us all! Thanks.
