Step Seven

The attainment of greater humility
is the foundation principle of each of AA's Twelve Steps.
For without some degree of humility,
no alcoholic can stay sober at all.

Hi, my name is Frank, and I'm powerless over alcohol.

Initially, I took Steps Five, Six, and Seven on the same day, as my sponsor directed. By having my grosser defects that I was aware of at that time fresh in my mind, having just taken Step Five, it was sort of a no-brainer to want God to remove them. My sponsor and I knelt and recited the Seventh Step prayer together, asking God to remove those things from me that blocked my usefulness to Him and those around me. As my sponsor promised me however, the longer that I'm sober the more that is revealed to me about myself. Simply said, as he puts it, " You ain't well yet, Grasshopper!" So, as I continue along my spiritual journey, many things come up that I realize the need for God's help with ... behaviors and attitudes which block me from the Sunlight of the Spirit. Steps Seven, Ten, Eleven, and Twelve are how I continue to keep growing spiritually and try to keep my house in order. I'm still not the man that God has planned, but the Steps allow me to continue to grow towards that ideal person that He wants me to be. We claim spiritual progress, not spiritual perfection. But for this alky, unless I keep striving for His perfect will for me, I too easily settle for mediocrity. So I need to continue to humbly ask Him to remove my shortcomings that are revealed to me through spot-check and daily inventories. And, of course, my sponsor is always willing to point them out to me as well. Thanks all for being here, God's peace to all.
