Tolerance

Honesty with ourselves and others gets us sober,
but it is tolerance that keeps us that way. . .
In other words, once an alcoholic fully realizes
that he cannot get well alone,
he will somehow find a way to get well and stay well
in the company of others.
It has been that way from the beginning of AA
and probably always will be so.

Hello, my name is Lisa and I am an alcoholic.

Tolerance ... allowing others to say what they feel and live according to their standards. I was intolerant towards people who were different from myself. Much of what I criticized yesterday I accept today, although I still reject some things. To love someone should not require sameness. Equally, I can accept people without agreeing with what they say or how they behave. Not everything I say or do is pure, and that has become the key to the acceptance of others. My history teaches me that I benefit from the variety of opinions that are represented in humankind.
