AA teaches us the truth about people
by letting us rub shoulders with it.
For example, the newcomer soon finds out
that his sponsor, perhaps idolized at first,
puts his pants on one leg at a time --
that he's a human being.
He reads Step Ten and he sees that the AA program
isn't written for Utopians.
It's written for human beings
who are going to make mistakes over and over again.
We make mistakes; we admit them;
we try to clean up the mess we made; and we go on.
It's not making a mistake that will kill me.
It's defending it that does the damage.
