Actors

B>Most people try to live by self-propulsion.
Each person is like an actor who wants
to run the whole show;
is forever trying to arrange the lights, the ballet,
the scenery and the rest of the players in his own way.
If his arrangements would only stay put,
if only people would do as he wished,
the show would be great.
Everybody, including himself, would be pleased.
Life would be wonderful. . .
What usually happens?
The show doesn't come off very well.

Hello everyone! Susan here ... alcoholic.

I remember many years ago, my ex-husband brought me a copy of the 20 questions from the Ann Landers column in the newspaper. I think I could say yes to 12 of them, but admit it to him? I wouldn't even admit it to myself! Many, many years later, as I came into the rooms of AA I still would not say I was an alcoholic, I just had a problem with drinking. At my third meeting, someone gave me a copy of the Big Book. That night as I lay in bed reading, I came upon pages 60-61. You know, the one about the actor? Well, I saw me for the first time. I was shocked that a book written 65 years ago could describe me so well. I was relieved to know that there were others who thought as I did. That's when I understood I was just like you. I was an alcoholic. Drinking is but a symptom of my disease. So many of us look for reasons not to be like you, but the Big Book has it all. It showed me who I was ... an alcoholic, nothing more nothing less. I love this program. I am a grateful alcoholic today.

Thank you!
