Steps

I took the Steps and sobriety was the result. . .
It is a new path, one that leads to infinite light
at the top of the mountain.
The Steps advise me about the footholds that are safe
and about chasms to avoid.
They provide me with the tools I need
during the many parts of the solitary journey of my soul.
When I speak of this journey,
I share my experience, strength and hope with others.

I'm Lou and I'm an alcoholic.

For me, the first three Steps represent, "I can't, God can," and "I think I'll let Him." These were very important as far as turning over my disease to my Higher Power. There was, and occasionally continues to be, a lot of work I've had to put in to stay sober, and when I try to stay spiritually fit, I seem to be able to handle the ship, so to speak. Of all the Steps, Step One is the one I have to get 100%, or as close to 100% as possible. I can't afford to allow denial to become strong enough that I will actually drink. Fortunately, I usually know I'm alcoholic as soon as I wake up in the morning -- if not before! Steps Two, Three, and the rest are not usually that internalized, at least in me. But if I realize I'm going to be around alcohol, if only for a few seconds, I'm very quick to say a short prayer usually encompassing the Second and Third Steps.

Thanks for letting me share.
