Road Maps

The suggestions we heard in AA were like road maps.
If you want to drive from Duluth to Los Angeles,
you get road maps.
The maps don't tell you
that you positively must go to Los Angeles.
They just point out the best ways to get there --
if that's where you want to go.
Originally, somebody -- many, many people --
must have traveled all those roads and turnpikes
and superhighways before the maps could be made.
When we first saw the Twelve Steps,
we thought they were rules.
But we looked closer, and we found
they were just a road map.
All they told us was that somebody -- many people --
had traveled from a miserable drinking life
to a wonderful sober life.
