Spirituality

Do not let any prejudice you may have
against spiritual terms deter you
from honestly asking yourself what they mean to you.
At the start, this was all we needed
to commence spiritual growth,
to effect our first conscious relation with God
as we understood Him.
Afterward, we found ourselves accepting many things
which then seemed entirely out of reach.
That was growth, but if we wished to grow
we had to begin somewhere.
So we used our own conception,
however limited it was.

Hello! Mab here, alcoholic in the flesh.

"Being Spiritual" ... quite an order for us very flesh and bones humans. Drinking clouded my spirit and I was lost, although I was certainly searching. Seeking my missing pieces. Some say we're spiritual beings having a human experience, but I am not so sure. I am very much human and of the flesh. But I do recognize that I have a soul that can soar or be devastated, too. I do know somehow (because my grandmother drummed it into me), that I have a spiritual soul for which I am accountable when I meet my Creator. I am also accountable for the maintenance of my human body and mind and what I do with the gift of this life. This gift of sobriety was not earned by me ... it was granted because I asked ... begged, even. And so, I need the material world to act out my spiritual salvation, to give back this gift to others. To increase my spiritual contact, I need my mind, my soul, my actions and all of that. Sometimes the flesh is the spirit, for it is the conduit by which I must envision my spiritual being. AA Service is spirituality in action, too. And spirituality is NOT a feeling, I suspect, it is an action. Feeling spiritual is not always possible, nor may it be an endorsement for being spiritual. I have too much in my life, however, and I know I need to stop the whirl of my world, do a mini-retreat, even if it is for ten morning meditation minutes, to activate that soul and spirit connectedness. And when I am in contact with my spirit source I call God, when my mind is centered on the vast oneness of the spirit through you and prayer and good action, I am one in the spirit. And I need that. May God grant us each that spirit knowledge of His love.
