Faith in Action

When World War II broke out,
our spiritual principle had its first major test.
AA's entered the services
and were scattered all over the world.
Would they be able to take discipline, stand up under fire,
and endure the monotony and misery of war?
Would the kind of dependence they had learned in AA
carry them through? Well, it did.
They had even fewer alcoholic lapses or emotional binges
than AA's safe at home did.
They were just as capable of endurance and valor
as any other soldiers . . .
their dependence upon a Higher Power worked.
And far from being a weakness,
this dependence was their chief source of strength.

I'm Scott, an alcoholic.

I am writing this on a fine day in Tallil AB, Iraq. The temperature is not 140 degrees today yet, it was last week, and there is not a sandstorm today. I am writing to say thank you for the Daily Thoughts. It's been real trying to be in a war-zone with one front, and at the same time have another war-zone inside of me, with its own front. This disease can really beat me up sometimes, especially when I cannot get to a meeting or catch one on line, and have too much time in my head! Your emails make daily living more bearable, and I do not rage like I used to. I have been sober for four years now and am so grateful to AA for a really nice life. I have so far been unable to find another friend of Bill W. here but I keep looking. Every once in a while I get a letter from a stranger/fellow AA member from the states and partake in a meeting by mail. You guys are saving me again and don't even know me. Thank you, I could never repay my debt to you and the fellowship, but am over here trying to do my small part. Thank-you for taking service work to a whole new level.
