An Answer

If you think you are an atheist, an agnostic, a skeptic,
or have any other form of intellectual pride
which keeps you from accepting what is in this book,
I feel sorry for you.
If you still think you are strong enough
to beat the game alone, that is your affair.
But if you really and truly want to quit drinking liquor
for good and all, we know we have an answer for you.
It never fails, if you go about it with one half the zeal
you have been in the habit of showing
when you were getting another drink.

My name is John, and I'm an alcoholic.

My God is the epitome of perfection in every area we can imagine. As an alcoholic, I try to be a perfectionist because I want to be God, I guess. I have perfect ideas, perfect plans, perfect morals ... but darn! My humanity gets in the way, and I am not so perfect after all. I am just a dumb erring person doing what I can to stay sober. I do believe God is accessible and I don't think he needs a broker. So I go directly to God as I understand God for the answer to my human failures. I don't go to another human for answers because he has only answers for himself. I chair an Intergroup speakers meeting, and I enjoy it because every week I hear somebody else's experience, strength, and hope. It is a lot different from the direction that so many alcoholics just as sick as me are so willing to try to make me follow. I just believe God would not give recovery to one person. If I ever drink again I will be turning my back on God because the moment I asked Him for sobriety He gave it to me and I just had to grow into it. Probably no human power could relieve my alcoholism smacks in the face of what I hear so much today. I have no power so how can I teach? How can I treat others? How can I fix them? No way I can! The very most I can do is share my experience, strength, and hope with you. Thanks!
- John
